Following graduating in Business Management and gaining a Post Graduate qualification in Personnel Management, Mike embarked on a 14 year career in HR, most in senior positions for a public sector organisation employing more than 13000 people.
In 1988, he switched to a 24 year career in Higher Education where he was appointed to a number of posts, including being the first Dean of Swansea Business School and Head of Marketing and Communications (International and UK). He has spent 10 years as the Manager of University and Business Interactions in an Incubation environment .
His International experience includes lecturing and quality assurance assignments in France, Germany, Finland, USA, China, Malaysia and Indonesia. Mike was also a member of a delegation from the UKSPA which negotiated a Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese Universities Science Parks Association. He was elected Chair of Wales Higher Education International Liaison Association (WHEILA) and worked with Welsh Government, British Council and HEW to set up Wales International Consortium (WIC).
Mike has also been a local politician, being elected as a Swansea Councillor in 1999. For 8 years during this time he has provided political leadership of education provision for 36000 pupils in over 100 schools in Swansea, with a revenue budget of over £149 million per annum. He devised and oversaw the delivery of the ‘Quality in Education (QEd) 2020’ strategy to improve educational attainment and standards, to enhance the learning environment and make most effective use of resources available.
He is a Governor of an FE college and local schools in Swansea and is Chair of the Building Enterprise Education in Swansea (BEES) group promoting enterprise among young people from 5 to 25.
